hank you to everyone who attended Reunion 2012! This year we had
alumni from as far back as 1952 and as far away as California (via train!)
return to the Mountain to reconnect and reminisce with classmates and teachers.
The weekend began under ominous clouds Friday night as alumni and current
SKS staff boarded the
Pride of the Hudson
for a three-hour cruise up and down
the Hudson River. The heavens opened up just as the boat pushed away from
shore, but after a 15 minute summer squall the clouds parted and everyone
thrilled to the sight of a double rainbow just off the port side. The weather
remained perfect as alumni enjoyed dinner, drinks, and stunning scenery in the
fading early summer light. After returning to shore, alumni joined each other for
one more drink on the Newburgh waterfront.
The rain returned the next morning, keeping the majority of the day’s activi-
ties inside. A memorial service was held in the Ogden Library, followed by an
Alumni Association meeting. As in years past, the school’s Board of Trustees
attended the meeting to address any questions or concerns that the Alumni Asso-
ciation had.
After a delicious clambake luncheon, the rain clouds left the Mountain for
the weekend and everyone enjoyed some free time. Some took advantage of a
kayak tour offered by Storm King Adventures, some enjoyed playing Frisbee and
badminton with their children on the athletic fields, and some spent the after-
noon wandering the campus revisiting their old dorms and favorite classrooms.
As twilight covered the Mountain, everyone returned to Ledoux Terrace to
enjoy cocktails and conversation in the evening breeze. The guests also saw the
christening of the Storm King School’s new scull, donated by Robert Parke ’57
for the School’s crew team. Cheers and applause erupted from the crowd as Bob
and SKS crew coach Stephanie Frank poured a bottle of champagne over the hull
of the boat, named
Parke ’57
.
With the boat duly christened, the alumni awards dinner began inside the
dining hall. SKS Chef Moises Ortega and his staff once again pulled out all the
stops, serving up a variety of stunning and scrumptious dishes. Outgoing Alumni
Association President Rich Roberts ’60 acted as master of ceremonies, and led the
assembled through a program of awards, speeches, and gratitude. After dessert
and coffee were served, alumni headed back outside for more conversation
under the mountain stars and to begin making plans for next year’s Reunion:
June 7–9, 2013.
