A
fter the end-of-school events — Prom, Commencement and Reunion weekend — those
of us remaining on campus throughout the summer look forward to the quiet months for
planning the upcoming year. This summer though has been anything but peaceful. The sounds
of jackhammers and shovels, Bobcat loaders crisscrossing campus, and children’s voices fill the
air. Across the street at Spy Rock, workers are scurrying to complete a much needed facelift/
renovation. The head of school’s residence has a new roof and siding. The kitchen has been
modernized; the floors sanded and polished; a new coat of paint added to the interior. The
sagging structure has been straightened and bolstered. Our hardworking maintenance crew
enlarged the lounge area in McConnell dorm. Students from around the globe are attending
a summer camp at SKS for cultural immersion (trips to Bear Mountain and New York City)
and ESL classes. Excitement abounds as our new Head of School Paul Domingue arrived
and participated in the Board of Trustees Strategic
Planning Retreat in early July.
This issue of OTM covers what’s been happening
on campus since March. Career Day was inspiring
and fun for both the alumni who shared stories of
their career paths and the student body (see page
9).
There were parties in honor of outgoing Head of
School Helen “Steevie” Chinitz (see page 10). Three
new members were added to the Board of Trustees
(
learn more on page 4) and there’s an active search
for several more. The iPad program was introduced
to the faculty and staff who attended classes to learn how to adapt this new technology into
their lesson plans.
We sat down with Paul Domingue and gleaned some insights into what’s on his agenda
for SKS in the coming months. He was open to any question and answered all of them with
candor. Many of you have expressed interest in meeting and welcoming Paul and his wife Dale
to the SKS family. You will have an opportunity to meet Paul and Dale, at
Homecoming
on
Saturday, October 6
.
More details will follow in the coming weeks. Please be sure to mark your
calendars for upcoming events.
By the time OTM hits your mailboxes, summer will have passed and school will be back in
session. We will be caught up in the excitement of a new school year. I encourage you to stop by
campus when you’re in the area to experience firsthand the energy and enthusiasm we all see on
a daily basis.
