exploring the streets of Vienna
we moved on to our final
destination.
Throughout our trip to
Europe, temperatures were
pretty cold and we even had
occasional light snow. In our
final days there was a late winter
storm that dumped an enor-
mous pile of snow on eastern
Austria and Hungary. It took
several days to clear the main
highway into Hungary and the
city of Budapest. Truck traffic
choked all three lanes as far as
the eye could see. Passenger
vehicles were routed off the
main road and we got an
impromptu tour of rural Austria
and Hungary, turning our two
hour drive into six. The group
took it in stride and once in
Budapest had a fantastic time

exploring the ancient city. We all
boarded a private cruise boat for
a tour of the River Danube. Once
set free, we all ventured into the
heart of Pest for shopping.
Some of us ventured across the
Danube to the baths built by
the Romans and later the Turks.
Mrs. Heno and I enjoyed
massages at the famed Gellért
Baths, while some of the
students ventured into the
thermal waters. Others
continued shopping and a few
returned to the hotel to drop
from exhaustion on this, our last
day of touring. While in
Budapest we dined in a
traditional Hungarian eatery to
the strains of live gypsy music.
Early the next morning we
headed to Budapest Airport for
our flight to Frankfurt, where we
would board our plane for
home. Of course, our arrival in
Newark was greeted with chilly
reception as we landed in the
last major snowstorm of the
season.
Everyone was exhausted, but
thrilled to have experienced the
Alpine regions of Europe. Fun
and educational, the trip had
everyone trying new cuisine
and venturing into history. Good
times were shared, good
friendships were made, and
great memories were created, all
that will last a lifetime.
