C
hair of the Board of Trustees, Peter M. Duggan and his wife, Mary Vance, were honored
for their contributions and dedication to SKS at a dinner in New York City on December 8.
Joined by Duggan family members, close personal friends and members of the SKS community,
Peter and Mary Vance were celebrated with speeches and gifts. Trustee Jim Settel ’50 served
as emcee. Rich Roberts ’60, Alumni Association President; Trustee Anne Davidson; Stephen
Duggan, Peter’s brother; and the new chair of the Board, Mike Brower ’63 all made kind remarks.
The clear highlight of the evening was a speech given by former SKS CFO Jack D’Angelo (who
is now a trustee). Jack took on the unofficial role of the “SKS Roastmaster.” The guests howled
with laughter as they related to Jack’s caricature of Peter (see box).
Later that month at a ceremony held on campus, the entire SKS community gathered to
dedicate a stone bench that has a perfect view of the Hudson River. Peter explained how The Bell
Tower honored his father’s many years of service to the School. He said, “I always wanted to be up
higher than my dad — that’s why I chose this specific bench!” A plaque affixed to the bench reads,
“
With Deepest Gratitude and Appreciation from The Storm King School Community to Peter M. Dug-
gan H’58 — Chair, Board of Trustees, 2003-2011 & to Mary Vance Duggan, His Loving Wife.”
Peter and Mary Vance will now embark on their next act — moving to the warm climes of
Naples, Florida for the winter months. They will return to Cornwall for the summer.
We deeply appreciate Peter’s and Mary Vance’s years of dedication and service to The Storm
King School. Enjoy retirement!

Retires
“Peter is the fourth Board Chair I have had the pleasure
to serve, I guess, for maybe 50 or 60 years. “What?!”
you say, it was more like ten? Boy, you could have
fooled me! I guess the way he worked me so hard, I was
counting in dog years.”
“Peter had a unique approach to running his board meetings.
He has a management style akin to Nikita Khrushchev and the
directness of Attila the Hun. While no shoe of his ever pounded
the table or swords drawn, banishing a staff member or another
trustee to Siberia was not out of the question.”
“Peter, living within walking distance
of the School, made him a very
frequent visitor to the campus. I put
a notch on the door frame every time
he came through the back door of the
Business Office. There were so many
cuts that the doorway collapsed in
just his first two years in office.”

“Peter served as
an officer in the
Navy. His first
ship assignment
was on the
Mayflower. He
was the guy on
board with the
whip who yelled,
“row, row!” over
and over and
over again.”
