News
THE STORM KING SCHOOL has appointed Joseph
Graziosi as the director of athletics. Mr. Graziosi is
no stranger to athletics at Storm King, serving as
associate director of athletics for the past three
years and head varsity soccer, wrestling, and
lacrosse coach. His teams have played for the
Hudson Valley Athletic League championships in
five consecutive seasons, most recently winning
Storm King’s first ever wrestling championship
in 2012. He has earned a reputation for building
programs through a positive and nurturing
approach to coaching while providing leadership
opportunities for athletes that have carried over
to all aspects of life on the Storm King campus.
Coach G” believes that athletics are an integral
part of the prep school experience providing
limitless teachable moments and experiences
that students will contemplate for years to come.
His personal axiom comes from the writing of
Roman epic poet Virgil: “They are able because
they think they are able.”

WHY I GIVE
By Bob Parke ‘57
IT MAKES ONE FEEL GOOD to do so. It feels good for the giver to know
that he or she can help an institution like our School with a program or
project for which there would otherwise not be funding available. Some
things must be funded such as operating expenses, faculty and staff
salaries, repair and maintenance of equipment and facilities, buildings
and grounds, which comprise the beautiful campus on its mountain
above the majestic Hudson.
Then there are other things that need funding to establish and enjoy
but that might be regarded as luxuries or pleasant but not critical. It is so
often these things that bring the most joy and meaning to a student’s life
at school, particularly a boarding school where one spends so much of
the year. Giving helps achieve a bit of that.
Then there is the giver’s favorite activity that he could not enjoy while
a student, either because the activity wasn’t available or because of the
demands of his academic program. In a sense (maybe only psychologi-
cally) he or she may now enjoy that activity. I saw rowing, for the first
time at the Henley Royal Regatta, during my summer vacation in 1956
while a student at Storm King. How exciting it would have been to
return to School and see and be part of Storm King rowing on the
nearby Hudson. Now that is the case and that feels like a distant dream
come true.
The giver of something of value to the students is also returning
those intangible gifts that he received as a student at Storm King, even if
he didn’t realize it at the time.
Bob recently gave a generous gift so the rowing team could have their own
boat and trailer. See the photo on page 25.
The Admissions Team is looking for alumni, parents,
and others who are interested in hosting an
Admissions Reception. Primarily, we need people
who can create an invite list of families that have
children of the right age. If you are interested in
helping the School find good prospective students
in this way, please contact Director of Admissions
Joanna Evans at
or 845.534.9860.
