S
pring is finally arriving here on the mountain! Believe me, it is welcome after a long,
grey winter. The students are outside again, enjoying the sunshine. Lacrosse, tennis, softball,
baseball, golf, and outdoor adventure activities fill the afternoons, but lingering a bit on the
cross campus walk also allows a moment to drink in the sweet spring air. Everywhere is the
sense of renewal and optimism, as the kids look forward to Commencement and summer
vacation, and for seniors to the many adventures that await them in their days after SKS.
So too, our school is poised at the verge of great opportunity. The first year of our new
strategic plan implementation is nearing completion and already we are seeing the results
of our efforts. We are vigorously engaged in our first campus development projects that
were called for in the strategic plan: developing a comprehensive campus master plan and
installing a complete wastewater treatment
system. Following on those important proj-
ects will begin the construction of our long
awaited academic center.
Never has a facility been more essential
for any school to build. Our campus is
bursting at the seams. Classrooms and
dorm rooms are both in short supply. By
expanding our academic facilities we will
also free up other campus real estate to expand boarding capacity and student social/recreational space—
both crucial to our planned growth.
And indeed, growth is the key. We have established the enrollment goal of “150 by 150,” that is 150
students by our 150th birthday in 2017. This modest increase will pay big dividends in efficiency, and is a
suitable benchmark for our subsequent planning and development.
The sense of renewal and forward movement is palpable on the campus. The entire school community
is focused on our “continual improvement”
modus operandi
.
Helping our students achieve their potential is
who we are and what we do. Doing the same for our school itself is no less an imperative of our mission.
During this season of renewal, I encourage you to renew your own relationship with our school. Stay in
touch. Attend our Reunion Weekend that will honor all those who have brought us this far, in a “Tribute to
Decades of Leadership.” Begin or renew your support of the Annual Fund. But most of all, in this season of
new beginnings, re-engage your own capacity for optimism and forward-thinking.
With sincere best wishes to you all,
Paul C. Domingue
